Background: On 23 May 2018, the first e-bidding of the international auction for the purchase of renewable energy was successfully held by the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan. This auction mechanism, replacing the fixed tariffs, enables now to determine market prices for renewable energy in the country.
As you may know, Kazakhstan plans generating 50% of its electricity from renewable and alternative energy sources according to President Nazarbayev’s ambitious 2050 strategy. The country sets out to increase the share of renewable and alternative energy sources in the electric power industry to 30% by 2030. The renewable energy market is growing every year: in 2017, a billion kWh of this energy was produced; this is 22% more than in 2016. The plan for 2018 should be in the range of 2.7 billion kWh of energy.
The potential of RES in Kazakhstan is indeed very significant and will generate future opportunities for projects developers, investors, consulting firms and beyond. Kazakhstan’s promotion of RES – hydropower, solar, wind, geothermal and biomass – reflects an ambitious move to attract further foreign direct investments and to diversify of the country’s power generation mix. Promoting RES comes with an improved regulatory framework and the increasing involvement of development banks and international finance institutions. Potential for enhancement of energy efficiency in industry is also high, introducing new technologies and equipment.
