Background – Belarus is very active in the development of the renewable energy sector. It will keep improving the energy supply mix in the country and promote the development of renewable energy projects in general. Several IFIs have started to pave the way for more engagement in the country to help the power sector in its transition into a more sustainable and diversified sector.
The country’s main strategy to meet the growing need of power is to reduce the energy dependency by increasing the energy efficiency, increasing the use of renewable resources, nuclear sources, and connecting to the European and CIS power infrastructure.
The renewables market size and the attention the authorities are paying to this matter make Belarus attractive, amongst others, to biogas companies.
The country also plans to increase its wind power capacity to 500 MW by 2030 from an insignificant level of cumulative installed capacity at present. For that purpose, measures to reduce the risks of financing wind energy have been put in place, which include securing private investments, transparent planning of energy sector, development of a long-term national strategy for wind energy and others.
On the other hand, Belarus is ranked among top 5 countries by attractiveness for solar photovoltaic energy investments among CIS countries. Current cumulative installed photovoltaic capacity and the number of fully permitted and ready to build projects have increased in 2017 and will continue in the next years. First photovoltaic (PV) power plants have been launched into commercial operation between 2012 and 2017, whilst a pipeline of over 230 MW solar power projects is progressing in different stages of permitting process for grid connection by 2020.
