Background – In his Development Strategy of Uzbekistan for 2017-2021, the country’s new President, Shavkat Mirziyoyev stressed the importance of moving toward greater use of renewable energy. Since 22 May 2019, the Renewable Energy Law has been adopted; this is a significant step in the development of a renewable energy sector in the country.
The Ministry of Energy is monitoring the development of the renewables in Uzbekistan. Moving forward, tariffs for electricity generated from renewables will be determined based on a competitive bidding process. State support for investors and developers will include tax, customs and other incentives, assistance with creation and implementation of innovative technologies as well as a State guarantee to connect the equipment to the national grid.
Uzbekistan has an immense renewable potential that can meet the country’s all energy demand using only renewable sources of energy. Alternative energy potential mainly consists of solar, wind, geothermal and biomass. It will offer significant business development opportunities in the coming years for project developers, technology providers, advisory and financing institutions.
