Ukraine aims to be connected to Europe’s power grid and to the EU electricity market. It is a matter for both sides to overcome technical issues and for Ukraine to deepen its ongoing reform of the electricity sector. Integrating Ukraine within a large green electricity market is an important piece for Europe to achieve a climate-neutral continent by 2050.

IRENA estimates onshore wind could reach 320GW and solar 70GW by 2030, almost all of it cost competitive. Adding biomass, biofuels, biogas and hydropower resources, Ukraine’s technical renewables potential could be 415GW, excluding offshore wind. The expansion of renewable energy in Ukraine and its integration into the EU energy system cannot happen without the contributing role of the local and international stakeholders.

There are still challenges to be mitigated on the Ukrainian energy sector, the way ahead. The country has an enormous potential for renewable energy based developments, referring to the decarbonization process post COP26 and the energy efficiency implementation across the whole country. Restoring investment attractiveness of the sector is on the agenda and stakeholders will be attentive to the upcoming steps taken to make a more sustainable market place.

Ukraine’s new Energy Strategy focuses on attracting investment to develop its energy infrastructure and integrate into the European market by 2025. The authorities will need to provide a regulatory environment geared towards this target, facilitating market operations. As the country confirms its plans to prioritize decarbonization, there will a continuing need for knowledge exchange, advisory , partnerships, investments and funding.

Attending: Key stakeholders including representatives from the government, International Finance Institutions (IFIs), policy makers, international and local developers, EPC contractors, independent power producers, engineering, legal and advisory services, manufacturers, banking and private equity entities.
