Market Expansion Means Business – Unveiling Potential – Promising Horizons

Maghreb has made tremendous progress in renewable energy development over the past decade, with significant investments being made to transition from fossil fuels to sustainable alternatives.

In 2023, the Government of Tunisia released a call for bids for 1,700 MW in renewable power over the 2023-2025 period. The tender includes eight 100 MW solar projects, eight 75 MW wind projects and two other solar projects. Back to June 2022, the country raised its target for renewables from 30 to 35% of power generation. To reach this objective, Tunisia intends to develop more than 4 GW of new renewables capacity by 2030, around 500 MW/year over a period of 8 years.

Whilst the country’s energy mix remains still predominantly fossil fuel-based, Algeria aims to reach a renewable energy capacity of 15,000 MW and produce 27% of its electricity from renewable resources by 2035.  Earlier in July, state-owned power utility Sonelgaz revealed a list of bidders for a 2 GW solar tender to develop solar projects in 11 locations throughout the country with capacities ranging from between 80 MW and 220 MW.

Mauritania has significant potential for both solar and wind energy, making the country an attractive green hydrogen market. It has set forth plans for hydrogen projects that could potentially generate 80 GW of electroliser capacity. Although gas remains a priority, the government intends to gradually introduce more renewable energy sources. The country expects to deliver its first green hydrogen projects in 2030, advancing from grey to blue to green energy.

The Libyan National Oil Company recently announced ambitious decarbonization plans. For international investors, developers and technology providers, this opens new opportunities for investing in renewable energy and green hydrogen. With ample sunshine and excellent winds along the Mediterranean coast, the conditions for renewable energy production are ideal. Betting on its proximity to Europe, Libya is preparing to become an exporter of green electricity in the post-hydrocarbon era.

Morocco is currently developing a number of renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 4.6 GWs. Developments for the period 2023-2027 are expected to reach 1.3 GWs. Morocco has exceptional resources of wind and solar energy on land, and a great potential for the development of off-shore wind energy. Last August, the country invested $5.2 billion in solar-related projects, with the Noor Ouarzazate complex, the largest renewable project in Morocco, reflecting the potential RE in the country.

Showcasing first-movers success stories around carbon-free hydrogen, exploring pathways of scaling-up projects throughout Power-to-X, as well as harmonizing roadmaps of the countries in the region will be discussed at this 8th edition. Strengthening cross-border and international cooperation becomes also a key milestone towards a regional integration.

Maghreb countries keep offering substantial investment and business opportunities for current and new stakeholders involved in the whole value chain.
