Renpower Madagascar

25 April 24
Antananarivo

Solar PV – Smart grid – Wind Systems – Carbon Capture – Energy Storage – Green Hydrogen – Financing

According to the World Bank, only 73% of the population has access to electricity in urban areas and only 11% in rural areas.  As part of the new Malagasy government’s 100-day program, renewable energy will play an important role in electrification initiatives over the next years. With the Madagascar Emergence Initiative, the government wants to increase the country’s electrification rate to 50% by 2030 and double electricity production, notably via the installation of solar and hydraulic power plants.

The country has also embarked into the Madagascar Rural Electrification Program,  This program, which aims to provide electricity to 70% of the rural population by 2030,  has already installed solar panels in many villages, providing clean and reliable electricity to remote areas. “The Government of Madagascar is fully committed to identifying and implementing appropriate strategies to accelerate access to electricity for communities, particularly in rural areas, using appropriate and effective mechanisms,” quoted Mamisoa Rakotoarimanana, Executive Secretary, Agency for Rural Electrification Development.

As to the network infrastructure, there are efforts to integrate more clean energy into the grid, including a 20 MW solar project near the capital, but most rural areas are off-grid and no grid expansion projects are currently planned in these areas. Given the lack of grid expansion plans, there is a significant opportunity to provide off-grid energy to remote communities.

Madagascar energy transition journey is in progress and the country looks for investments, partnerships and collaboration. There are opportunities for the whole value chain: developers, EPCs, storage technology providers, PV solar manufacturers, off-grid solutions, legal, advisory, financiers, etc.
