Renpower East Africa Investors 2021 – Insights into Ethiopia’s & Uganda’s renewable energy markets

The Renpower East Africa – investors 2021 has been designed to facilitate the dialogue among a wide cross-section of energy sector stakeholders – local and regional policymakers, private sector representatives and international experts – gathered to move forward with the resolution of adopting renewable energy to address key challenges such as energy security, energy sustainability and a resilient power infrastructure.

Ethiopia has set an ambitious target (National Electrification Program-NEP) to supply 100% of its domestic energy demand through renewable energy by 2030, with off-grid solutions for 35% of the population. To this aim, the government has, since 2016, taken considerable steps to attract private sector investment into the power sector to support its ambitious pipeline of renewable power projects, and is actively moving from public generation investments to IPPs projects.

The government is working to increase electrification coverage across the country from its current 4,280 MW electricity generation capacity to 17,300 MW by 2025, including power generation projects in hydro, wind, geothermal, solar and biomass sectors. Ethiopia has also embarked on massive energy projects across the country with a view to make it a power hub and the battery for the Horn of Africa by 2025.

As to Uganda, the country is richly endowed with abundant energy resources, which are fairly distributed throughout the country. These include hydropower, biomass, solar, geothermal, peat and fossil fuels. The energy resource potential of the country includes an estimated 2,000 MW of hydropower, 450 MW of geothermal, 1,650 MW of biomass cogeneration, 460 million tons of biomass standing stock with a sustainable annual yield of 50 million tons, an average of 5.1 kWh/m2 of solar energy, and about 250 Million tons of peat (800 MW).The overall renewable energy power generation potential is estimated to be 5,300 MW.

With only 28% of the population having access to electricity, Uganda presents a huge market potential for alternative technologies such as solar PV systems. To address the electricity access deficit, the country targets unserved households with appropriate systems and innovative business models to suit their needs.

JOIN US TO DISCUSS

  • Ethiopia and Uganda’s plans and strategy to meet their clean energy targets
  • Promoting electricity generation and energy efficiency through renewables – market opportunities
  • Scaling-up of the off-grid market in Ethiopia and Uganda – mini grid, energy storage and cross-technology energy generation
  • Financing the ongoing transition to modern energy, off-grid and new utility-scale projects in Ethiopia and Uganda

All these questions, challenges and further prospects will be discussed in-depth during presentations and moderated panel discussions. Furthermore, there will be live Q&A and direct networking available for all the attendees being linked to the conference platform.

Not just a webinar – a full event experience!
