The latest… massive opportunities for renewable energy investors in Central Asia:

Central Asian economies, particularly Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, are pursuing increasingly ambitious goals for renewable energy.

Kazakhstan plans to source 35% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2035 (amounting to about 12 to 16 GW), while the share of RE currently stands at 14%. Ambitious projects, such as Hyrasia One (the project envisions the installation of 40 gigawatts of dedicated wind and solar capacity in the Mangystau region near the Caspian Sea), are driving the sector in Kazakhstan.

The Uzbek government, on the other hand, has set new ambitious goals for renewable energy development to power the country, 27 GW of renewable energy capacity and 40% of electricity production from renewables by 2030. This includes solar, wind, hydro, and biomass. More than a dozen of renewable projects are underway worth hundreds of MWs in Solar PV and Wind generation that will soon be powering the country to continue feeding the local economy and export in the regional market. Several of these are hybridized projects that for the first time in Central Asia include MWs of Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS) + RENEWABLES, as well as a pilot Green Hydrogen project powered by wind technology led by international cooperation with the local government and private sector.

Increased regional cooperation is also being made, notably through the development of Central Asia-Azerbaijan green energy corridor and transmission of green energy, which will allow export of electricity to Europe. The countries of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan recently finalized a draft intergovernmental agreement for the latter.

Last but not least, Kyrgyzstan has its own ambitious projects, particularly through the Kambarata 1 hydro power plant, which will be one of the largest hydropower projects in Central Asia, with a capacity potential of 1,860 MW. The World Bank is financing the project, with preliminary construction cost at more than $4 billion.

The financing of the first renewable energy projects in Central Asia has indeed been carried by international multilateral institutions that see the potential of investing in the region to enhance its renewable energy capabilities and pave the way for more investors to join!

The program is spread over 7 main panel sessions. Topics to be addressed:

    • Renewable energy capacity development in Central Asia;
    • Results of 1st mega projects;
    • Central Asia – Azerbaijan Green Energy Corridor;
    • Progress in development Kambarata-1 HPP;
