We are very pleased to announce the hosting of the Zambia Renewable Energy & Power Infrastructure Investors Conference, the next event organized by Euroconvention Global in sub-Saharan Africa. The conference will take place in Lusaka (Zambia) on the 17th of May 2017.
Zambia faces an energy – and in particular an electricity – supply gap in meeting the growing needs of its people and economy. The government is seeking, notably through the development of renewable energy sources and technologies, new ways to substantially increase its energy supply to meet this growing demand and extend the national grid to rural populations.
Renewable energy sources are indeed abundant in Zambia, with hydropower (both small and large) as the major contributor to the country electricity supply. However, a vast array of renewables (including solar, solid biogas, biodiesel, ethanol, and waste to energy) are now being added to the energy mix and are key to the country’s enormous potential for increased power production.
A number of initiatives aimed at creating a more conducive environment for renewable energy and energy efficiency have been launched by the government. The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), the investment company wholly owned by the Zambian government, along with IFC are currently in Round 2 of their Scaling Solar Zambia program, aimed at exploring the development of large-scale solar projects in the country. Following the first successful tender for up to 100 Megawatts (MW), Round 2 is currently taking place with 150MW – 250MW up for grabs, and with Round 3 for the remaining 250MW – 350MW to be announced shortly.
