Renpower Nigeria – A West African “Hot Spot” for Clean Power Generation, Transmission & Distribution
Clean energy is gaining momentum as several countries are intensifying their climate change policies with a target to go carbon-neutral by 2050 or 2060, a development with dire implications for oil-dependent economies, including Nigeria.
The Nigerian government is taking steps to achieve universal energy access by 2030 and carbon-neutral system by 2060. According to the International Energy Agency, more than 70% of its population still does not have access to modern and reliable energy, which includes electricity and clean cooking facilities.
While Nigeria’s inflation rate has increased by 16% in 2022, there were low capital availability and restrictions to secure financing for clean energy projects in the country. Furthermore, the availability of finance in dollars is limited and currency fluctuations pose a risk to foreign investors and developers. Overcoming these barriers will be discussed by all the stake holders involved in the value chain as will the business opportunities arising in this expanding renewable market.
We will gather under one roof government officials and agencies, gas companies, developers, EPCs, IPPs, distribution and transmission companies, technology providers, IFIs and development banks facilitating the development of renewable and off-grid solutions.
With its 200+ trillion (potentially up to 600 trillion) cubic feet of untapped proven gas reserves, natural gas will be a crucial asset as a transitionary fuel to a viable pathway to greener solutions, opening the doors to many gas-to power projects in the years to come- As the country’s energy sector faces major financial and technical challenges, there are also a bunch of opportunities for solutions providers of all kinds – from latest technology, storage system to new sources of funding. Definitely a new “hotspot” in West Africa for clean power generation, its transmission and distribution, notably with the booming demand for off-grid solutions in rural electrification and C&I sector.
