Background: The development of technologies to produce green hydrogen from renewable energy resources is allowing this molecule to enter the energy market. The benefits of green hydrogen represent an opportunity for the diversification of the energy mix with more clean energy and help global economies on their pathway to become carbon-free.
Looking at Latin America, the region has resources to produce and utilize green hydrogen; an electricity matrix with a low emission factor, high production energy from non-conventional renewable sources that favors electrolyzers, and abundant space and water resources. Countries like Chile, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Argentina and Colombia are leading the adoption of green hydrogen with a series of projects and policy initiatives to unfold the potential of this new technology to provide electricity and decarbonize industries such as mining and transportation. Furthermore, hydrogen is a viable option for energy storage to balance renewable generation from solar and wind sources.
Favorable regulatory policies, scaling-up the value chain, contribution of academic research, improvements in the infrastructure, and optimizing financial models will all be key for green hydrogen to take-off and to become a more competitive source of energy in Latin America.
