Renpower Greece

30 June 22
Athens

Athens, Greece – June 30, 2022

The program of the third edition of RENPOWER Greece will gather key decision-makers from the private and public sector to address insightful topics to accelerate carbon-neutrality and secure power independence in the current energy landscape.

Recently, the European Commission presented its €300 billion plan to fast-track the bloc’s energy independence and continue boosting renewables under the European Green Deal to become carbon-neutral by 2050. Under the REPowerEU, the Commission also wants to increase the mix of renewable power in the EU to 45% from the current 40% target by 2030.

Greece, as one of the EU members, has established its National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) to reach the 2030 EU goals. In the most recent version of Greece’s NECP, wind and solar capacity are set to more than double by 2030. To assist in Greece’s energy transition, at the end of 2021 the European Commission approved €2.27 billion to produce electricity from renewable sources with a combined capacity of 4.2 GW. Moreover, the model of two-way contract-for-difference (CfD) premium for the support of renewable energy auctions was approved just in time for the 2022 RE auctions.
The Hellenic nation is also seeking to establish policies to capitalize on the energy markets of offshore wind, licensing of renewables, and power storage (BESS) – estimating an unleash of 12 GW of new renewable capacity and €10 billions of investment. However, with the current geopolitical and energy landscape, what additional shifts will be necessary to achieve energy independence and security for Greece whilst staying on track to achieve carbon-neutrality?
