Background – After having adopted strict measures to reduce its carbon footprint, the Caribbean governments are becoming more open for renewable energy sources in the energy mix to slowly walk away from the high-cost on imported fossil fuels to help their economies and make the islands self-sufficient.
As an untapped region, studies show that the Caribbean holds 2,525.9 MW of potential solar energy, 800.4 MW of potential wind energy, and 3,770 MW of potential geothermal energy. Added to the 3.1 GW of already operating renewable energy in the region. Countries such as Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic lead by example the adoption of installed renewable energy as they continue to increase their targets for renewable energy in the energy mix, 50% by 2035 and 25% by 2025, respectively.
Furthermore, the power infrastructure faces challenges due to increasingly frequent and extreme weather events calling for an innovative and climate-resilient power infrastructure to provide energy security to the islands.
RENPOWER Caribbean will be hosted in Dominican Republic, one of the countries in the region that’s retaken the initiative to open its doors for investors in renewable energy. The 2-days event will be divided in 8 sessions covering relevant topics to further stimulate the adoption of renewables in the region.
