Renpower Algeria – Paving the way for 15 GW of renewable projects by 2030

Back to March 2023, Algeria’s state-owned utility Sonelgaz has issued a tender for the development and construction of 15 solar plants with a combined capacity of 2 GW. The projects will be built in 11 locations, with capacities ranging from 80 MW to 220 MW.

Indeed, Algeria aims to reach 15,000 megawatts of electricity generation capacity based on renewable resources by 2035, with a growth rate of 1000 MW/year. Furthermore, around 1000 MW of off-grid renewable energy installations are expected to be put on stream by 2030.

A second call for tenders for the construction of solar power plants with a capacity of 2000MW will be launched in November 2023.

Algeria has so far used its hydrocarbon resources to meet an ever-increasing domestic energy demand. To continue exporting its dwindling hydrocarbons, the country now needs to reconsider the role of renewables and add significant renewable resources to its power generation mix by 2035 in order to be able to meet domestic electricity demand. Oil and gas exports generate 95% of the country’s foreign exchange earnings, and this is an important catalyst for promoting the development of renewable resources across the country.

Over the past two years, the Algerian government has taken further steps, carrying out feasibility and deployment studies, and has created a Ministry of Energy Transition and Renewable Energy as well as the Algerian Renewable Energy Company (Shaems).

These new developments in the production of energy and its distribution are as many opportunities in terms of investment needs, contribution of new technology, local partnership and financing for the national and international bidders interested: consulting , engineering, development, construction, logistic, transport, finance, etc. Be on the lookout!
